Day Trips from Sydney

Some of New South Wales' best experiences are within a couple of hours of the city. Whether you're after mountains, vineyards, national parks or quiet coastal towns, here are the day trips worth building into a longer stay.

Nature & Mountains

Blue Mountains
~90 min drive

Blue Mountains

World Heritage wilderness of eucalypt valleys and sandstone cliffs. See the Three Sisters at Echo Point, ride the steep Scenic Railway, and browse the mountain villages of Katoomba and Leura.

Royal National Park
~1 hr drive

Royal National Park

The world's second-oldest national park, just south of the city — coastal clifftop walks, the Wattamolla lagoon and beach, and the much-photographed (and dangerous) Figure Eight Pools.

Wine & Country

Hunter Valley
~2 hr drive

Hunter Valley

Australia's oldest wine region — over 150 cellar doors known for Semillon and Shiraz, plus gourmet produce, cheese, chocolate and long lunches among the vines.

Southern Highlands
~90 min drive

Southern Highlands

Cool-climate country around Bowral and Berrima — boutique wineries, antique shops, historic villages, gardens and cosy cafes; lovely in autumn and tulip season.

Coast & Beaches

Central Coast
~1.5 hr drive

Central Coast

A string of relaxed beaches and waterways north of Sydney — surf at Terrigal, walk the Bouddi coastal track, and see the wildflowers or the pelican feeding at The Entrance.

Wollongong & Sea Cliff Bridge
~1.5 hr drive

Wollongong & Sea Cliff Bridge

Follow the Grand Pacific Drive south over the cliff-hugging Sea Cliff Bridge to Wollongong's beaches, the Nan Tien Temple and the Illawarra escarpment lookouts.

Palm Beach & Northern Beaches
~1 hr drive

Palm Beach & Northern Beaches

The tip of the northern peninsula — climb to the Barrenjoey Lighthouse for sweeping ocean-and-bay views, then relax at 'Summer Bay' beach or a waterfront pub.

Good To Know

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a car for day trips from Sydney?
A car gives the most flexibility. Some destinations (Blue Mountains, Wollongong, Central Coast) are reachable by train, and guided coach tours run to the Blue Mountains and Hunter Valley.
What's the best day trip for first-timers?
The Blue Mountains is the classic — dramatic scenery, easy walks and mountain villages, all about 90 minutes from the city.
Can these be done by public transport?
Several can — trains reach Katoomba, Wollongong and the Central Coast — but wineries and national parks are much easier with a car or an organised tour.
How long should I allow?
Most are comfortable as a full day; the Hunter Valley and Southern Highlands also make a relaxed overnight if you have time.
